The Bunnies
The large stump with the tree growing from it in the parking lot is where the original two bunnies made home some 30 years ago.
The rabbits found it very easy to escape their confines and today flourish with the conditions they currently enjoy. With acres of grass and woods to nibble on, and lots of space to hop about, you'll find them everywhere around the campground. The laws of nature do apply and they face many obstacles such as man, predators, weather, and each other. Although they may have had domestic beginnings, that was a long time ago and they should be considered wild.
Born hairless, blind and helpless, they reach maturity in about six months. They live within large colonial warrens, which they dig themselves. Their breeding season runs through spring and summer with gestation lasting about 30 days then producing four to six young per litter. Some females have as many as seven litters a year! The rabbits are very territorial and do not welcome domestics but may tolerate fertile females and definitely do not make good pets.
