About Squamish:

   In the late 1700's, Captain Vancouver wrote in his diary about sailing into Howe Sound and his first contact with the local tribe, the Sqohomish. The Indian word "Squamish" means 'mother of the wind' or 'strong wind,' describing the winds that funnel in from Howe Sound keeping our temperature moderate. European settlers arrived in 1888 relying on hop farming and crops which were shipped to England. Eventually the forestry industry developed.      
   Situated in a scenic valley at the tip of Howe Sound, Squamish is located in the heart of Sea-to-Sky country, half way between the city of Vancouver and the resort town of Whistler.
    Year-round, Squamish offers an abundance of outdoor activities including Camping, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, scuba-diving, kayaking, kiteboarding, windsurfing and golfing and. Squamish is world renowned for it rock climbing areas, from the Stawamus Chief to the Smoke Bluffs overlooking the town.
    Squamish offers a variety of retail shops, services, and restaurants to meet the needs of visitors.
    Squamish is the "Winter Resort Destination" for the Bald Eagle. As many as 3,000 eagles, attracted by seasonal salmon runs, reside here from mid-November to mid-February. The dykes along the Squamish and Mamquam Rivers provide a perfect viewing spot. Squamish is also famous for staging the "World's Largest Logging Show." The Squamish Days Logger's Sport Association is an organization of volunteers committed to providing an exciting and memorable community event. The festival is held every year on the BC Day long weekend thrilling visitors with the world class logging competitions. Also, history buffs enjoy our West Coast Railway Heritage Park and daily summer visits by the Royal Hudson steam train.
   The Brennan Park Leisure Center offers a modern arena/community center/indoor pool complex with adjoining baseball, softball and soccer fields, skateboard bowl and tennis courts.

     

About Shannon Falls Provincial Park:

    Located directly across Highway 99 from Klahanie Campground, Shannon Falls presents an impressive display. At 335 meters, Shannon Falls is the third largest water fall in Canada and attracts thousands of visitors annually. The pure clear water of Shannon Falls was used by Carling O'Keefe Breweries in one of their beers until they donated the land for a provincial park. Enjoy a picnic, take a walk to the base of the falls, investigate old forestry artifacts and displays, or hike to the top of the falls.
    The best time of year to view Shannon Falls is in late spring and early summer when water level are high and the falls are at their prime. As one of the most spectacular accessible waterfalls in Canada, it's an absolute must see.

 

About Stawamus Chief Provincial Park:

   Located minutes north of Klahanie Campground, Stawamus Chief Provincial Park is Squamish's latest provincial park. The Stawamus Chief, one of the worlds largest granite monoliths, stands at 652 meters (2140 feet) high and is the second highest free-standing granite outcropping in the world, number one being the Rock of Gibralter.
   "The Chief" is one of North America's greatest rock climbing locations, the monolith provides some 280 climbing routes, from novice climbs to the hardest rock climbing in Canada. "The Chief" is also a great destination for hikers, who can reach any one of the three summits via trails that can be accessed from the park headquarters or nearby Shannon Falls Provincial Park.
